Yofifest & Pastrami

This year  Yonkers, NY –my home town– held it’s 3rd annual film festival “YoFi Fest“.  It was extra special for our family because my husband Maurice and his friend Joe Panella’s short documentary was one of the selected participating films. There film the “USS Princeton: Lost But Not Forgotten” is about the journey of two friends Rudy and Frank onboard the USS Princeton during World War II. This film captures a part of history through the experiences of these two men who were just 19 years old when they enlisted. It’s a wonderfully funny film, if you are interested in watching it please contact Maurice Mercado.

I was able to accompany my husband to the opening night event which featured a screening of Deli Man and the ” Best Pastrami” contest. Deli Man by Erik Greenberg Anjou’s is a funaminal documentary about the history and life of Jewish delicatessens.

Harry & Ida’s pastrami sandwich

I LOVE pastrami. I grow up in Manhattan and my dad would take me out to eat pastrami sandwiches all the time. So you can imagine how excited I was for the “Best Pastrami” contest. The contest featured tastings from Liebman’s Kosher Delicatessen, Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Co. and Ben’s Kosher Restaurant Delicatessen Bar & Caterers. Most delicious was awarded to Harry & Ida’s; but all three sandwiches were so delicious. I can’t wait to visit all three locations.

Special thanks to the coordinators of YoFi Fest for putting together an awesome film festival. Can’t wait until next year.
